Freda Tyers was only 12 years old in 1929 when she began attending George Jeffreys' meetings at the Cory Hall. Freda told her first hand experience of God's miraculous power.
"One night, I was late for the meeting. Crowds were pouring in and I could only get a seat right at the back. I looked at the lady sitting next to me. She had lovely blue shoes with a buckle and a brown skirt. I remember thinking the shoes and the skirt didn't really match, then I looked at her face - it was awful, contorted and twisted. I tried not to look.
As the meeting was coming to a close Mr Jeffreys asked people who wanted prayer for healing to come forward. The lady said to me 'would you hold my bag while I go for prayer'. so I did.
After a while a lady came to me and asked for the bag. 'It's not yours', I said, 'I'm looking after it for someone'. 'It's me', she said 'Jesus has healed me.'
I looked at her face - it was absolutely beautiful. I looked at her brown skirt and the blue buckled shoes and, sure enough, it really was the same woman.
She had been instantly and completely healed."
The City Temple began with an atmosphere of vibrant worship and relevant preaching together with a demonstration of God's power to heal the sick and change lives. These same priorities continue to shape who and what we are today.
